GR Corolla news

So this car has me more excited than it should. I guess because I really liked the idea of the GR Yaris that we can’t get here in the US. My FiST would have to leave me to get one. Love the FiST, but the only thing that lets me down at time is putting the power down from a stop, especially when wet. My FiST has more torque running an ethanol tune than the GRC would stock. That and adding about 500lbs and I’m curious how happy I’d be with the switch.

Golf R MSRP starts at 44,0990 (plus dest im sure), what dealerships are charging is irrelevant to the conversation.

I don't get how what dealerships are charging is irrelevant? Do you buy your cars from Mr. Toyota himself? The incentive for them to upcharge is there and unless Toyota explicitly forbids that, then it is entirely relevant. For the record, that 60k was from an Illinois dealer.

I would almost expect the Toy dealers to dare to gouge this GR up to that point as well (yes, unless Mr. Toyoda prohibits them from doing this at all), regardless of the real, or perceived, demand for the car

Yup WAY TOO MUCH for a Corolla, despite how much 'supacar' it is. [wink]

Its irrelevant because not EVERY dealer is charging over MSRP, and definitely not that MUCH over MSRP.

It would be like someone taking a picture of a loaf of bread with a $468 price tag, "OMG Bread is so expensive, thats crazy!!!" Local news get in on it, running reports on it, national media gets involved "The price of food is out of control!!!! Everyone is going to starve to death because food is so expensive!!!!" Then we get senate hearings on how we can save society from starvation due to rising cost of food...

All because one kid with a price gun didn't put the decimal point in a price... is that 1 price tag relevant in the grand scheme of things?

Yes, I am 100% sure there are dealers charging 50% over MSRP. But anyone serious about buying an R is going to shop around. I have gone half way across the country to save 1-2k on a car, I would definitely do it for 16k savings..

So no, basing a whole conversation on 1 stupidly over priced marked up dealer, is irrelevant.

In case you still believe every single dealer in the country is pricing Rs at 60k +, here is 1 of many listings showing for MSRP.

If you are ONLY talking about what dealerships are going to price the GR at, yes, there will be dealers charging over MSRP. And yes, if they only release say 1000 for the entire country, its possible EVERY car will be over MSRP.

With the advent of Carvana and other companies, shopping around is the norm. You can get a car from across the country shipped directly to your house as opposed to going to the local Toyota dealer and dealing with the assistant manager Tom.

My point I was getting at is that these are in such a low quantity at 6,500 units(1500 circuit), you will be hard pressed to get one unless you have a good connection at Toyota. I agree 60k for a golf R is absurd and it may have been on the higher end of normal. I wouldn't be surprised if they were going for that or near that.

Your example of bread being $468 is a bit misleading, you can buy a load of bread for lets say $3, you'd probably still pay $4.50 if you value the bread at the level, maybe even $6. You do price out a lot of people when you get on the upper end of the utility curve. The demand gets lower, but the supply is arguably already pretty low for these cars. Eggs are something that, I just saw at the store for $4 bucks a dozen for generic store eggs(this is in MN at Hyvee, so a midwestern store with lower prices then say CA). 2 years ago this would have been absurd, anything for generic store eggs around $2.

A good realtor won't let you put your house on the market for 500k when its a 300k house and let you slowly drop it down to 350k, that would be dumb for them and a waste of their time. Car dealers inventory is limited they have a similar senario but even more demand as houses can't be easily moved(or at all) and cars can, they have people coming from around the country to their dealership to buy the car so pricing cars nationally as opposed to locally is in their best interest as car dealers. Competition is still a thing though, so the market will find a happy middle ground, I am sure on that.

Back to cars,

Fair price of 50k, MSRP is 46k since they don't give us the distribuition of cars I am going to assume a lognormal one as that makes the most sense with most cars selling around that 46k-50k range(60k does seem a bit absurd looking at this range and is also why I choose lognormal). Taxes and other fees, you might be looking at driving off the lot in a new 2022 Golf R manual for 52k-57k. That is entirely reasonable in this market seeing as the R and GTI are the only models we will be getting for the Golf and they have similar numbers of volume historically to what we see Toyota making for the GR Corolla.

So 60k MSRP is a bit high, but 57k off the lot is in the picture.

Toyota also said based on demand* They will build more. So with that said Toyota will Mass produce them I think....making them more available. Plus they don't have to deal with the chip shortage because they were smart when it came to chips. So in the end Toyota and its consumer base will make out like bandits.

Whether or not Toyota was affected by the chip shortage I can speak about the fact that they have severe inventory issues for whatever reason. My buddy was quite successful at Manhattan Beach Toyota for the last 5 years and just quite due to not being able to get enough cars to sell. Toyota is rationing out all their cars big time . Which will mean initially the GR Corolla will be quite scarce. Now if they shift production into full gear for 2023 that could change but for the next 9 months at least don’t expect them to be easy to get or find at MSRP.

Demuro did a non-driving preview video of this yesterday, it's on YT.

The more I think about the possibility of selling my FiST to get a GR I'm uninterested. It is/will be a great car. But:

1 with today's pricing and markups I imagine steep abuse by dealers...gonna be $40k plus for higher trims, easy...Type Rs are selling for that much, used
2 they're only making 5000 base models and only 1500 'circuit' models, which will have all the goodlies...this will be unobtainium
3 a modded fiesta like mine still makes 15% more hp and 30% more tq
4 GR is 12" longer and 500 lbs heavier
5 I have driven my FiST all week and it's just too good a car to part with

Ya I would not part with my FiST for the GR Corolla . Of course I am not particularly impressed with how the car looks and ya pricing is way too high for a function over form purchase.

what discourages me from getting one is the increasingly punitive measures from lawmakers taken towards tuning. as nice as 300hp, this isnt a car where I would want to keep stock.

going forwards when getting a new car, going to prefer getting something I can more comfortably go without adding more power, even if paying more upfront

Yeah, I can see that as a dilemma, since the AWD allows it to actually USE more power, and the extra weight of that system, along with it being a bigger/heavier (than a FiST) car to begin with, warrants that modding increase in power. [wink]

Ya I am right there with you. Hence I am looking at the Z hard 400HP stock on a RWD car that is most likely a 100 lbs lighter than the Corolla and comes stick and looks great pretty much rings the bell for me.

Man that's a really good point, I know the Z is coming soon, price will be comparable with the GR once optioned up. If I could have one of the two the Z is definitely the one I'd choose.
