Bronco/Bronco Sport: Move over, Jeep.

I have 2 major complaints/thoughts:

1) For the regular non “sport” bronco the 2.3 and the 2.7 engines are much too close to one another in the amount of power they each develop both when stock or modified. Ford should’ve either replaced the 2.7 with the 3.5 EB or put the 2.0 EB as the base motor. As it stands the available motors seem redundant and I don’t really see why anyone would pay the premium for the 2.7 unless they were deathly allergic to the sounds a 4 cylinder makes.

2) Launching the Bronco Sport at the same time for a lower price will very likely hamstring regular Bronco sales. With the way Ford has been axing for products due to “lack of demand” they certainly find interesting ways of killing demand in their own product line. Rhe majority of would be Bronco owners will be better served by the Bronco Sport which will have better road manners and fuel economy but will offer the “looks” of hardcore off-roading. I think there is a very big chance that after the initial interest of the Bronco dies off after a year or 2, Bronco Sport sales will be so much higher than regular Bronco sales that there will be a meeting at Ford corporate about whether or not they kill the real bronco and drop the sport nomenclature off of the Bronco Sport and sell it as the only Bronco in the lineup.

Time will tell, but with Ford’s track record toward their enthusiast vehicles I think it’s a valid concern.

I am stupid excited about the Bronco. MSRP isn't as high as I thought it would be.

I might be in the market for one soon.

I will not be buying one.
I stand by all my previous statements I will not own an SUV or crossover. Maybe a truck one day for utility needs but it will more likely be a beater truck.

I won't be buying any vehicles right now unless something got totaled out. The economy and the future have me a little scared to spend any money.

With that said I believe it will sell very well. I also believe a lot of people will be buying the more expensive packages like the Sasquatch package. Where I live Rubicon Jeep wranglers are very common, so are Ford raptors.

I don't think the Sport will impact the sales of the regular bronco. In fact the pricing is so close that the Sport model might suffer.

Another thing, I worked at Chrysler/jeep dealer for a long time I've seen removable tops leak at just 3,000miles. Of course this depends on the end user and if they place it back correctly or not. But I do think it will end up being an issue with the bronco as well.

I myself would just get the Spot because I don't like removable tops in any car at all and I'm not much for going out on trails. Also I believe the dealer markups are going to make things impossible to get a good deal.

I had this concern, but realistically what I see happening is the enthusiasts will buy the Bronco, and the mall crawl "tough moms" will by the sport. My expectation is they will sell both in mass for at least 5 years. Just look at the Jeep Renegade, has it stolen any sales from Wrangler? Unlikely, its only added some sales to those that don't want a spinal injury, but want to be "tough".

I have no use for it, it fills no need in my life, other then I REALLY WANT IT...

When have you see a production car be as good or better then the concept?
I have no use for it, either, but it does look really, really cool.

I think Jeep has reason to worry. They've dominated the serious off-road market for a long time, but there's a new kid on the block. We'll see...

I would never buy one, but the 2 door one looks cool, and I would consider that over the Jeepsters IF I were in the market for that type of thing (plenty of power available, REAL live manual gearbox, etc.). [wink]

Can the 2 door be had with actual DOORS?!? LOL
Every pic I've seen of it is in 'rock crawler' NO doors mode.

Yes, they come with normal doors. It really depends on the model.

I'd be reluctant to buy the 2 door. The Jeep equivalent moves around so much during regular driving that it's just awful.

I don't believe in manuals for trucks or SUVs anymore, but it's cool they offer it for the bronco.

That was my thought as well. The 2 and 4 doors will be (mostly) for the people that want to get off road and the Sport will be for the soccer moms and people that want the look more than the real deal.

I want the 2 door with the 7 speed manual and the 35" tires... Oh man that looks nice.

Definitely. I see no reason to buy the 2.7 at all. The 2.3 has proven to be reliable and highly tunable in the Mustang. I'm assuming this motor shares more with the Mustang than the RS given it's longitudinally mounted. I see Cobb supporting the 2.3 Broncos within the first few months, and they'll likely have it up to similar power as the Mustang. Tons of knowledge and parts around the 2.3, so if you want to tune your Bronco at all, that's the one to get. It's also your only option for a manual.

The 2.7 has a lot less track record and support. There's a few truck specialists doing custom tunes, but not much else. I think this is mostly down to a lack of F-150's optioned with it, and generally no one really understanding why this engine exists. Why wouldn't Ford just do a few different versions of the 3.5 with different tunes, and maybe even different internals/heads/turbos for different power levels? Seems that would be the more economical choice than making two entirely different engines.

I’ve never had a drop of interest in any truck or SUV... but I kind of want a Bronco 2 door. These are deeply confusing feelings.

It is mind blowing to me that they are not offering the Sasquatch package - the good shocks, flares, big tires pack - with the manual. I think a 2 door base model with the 2.3l, stick, and the Sasquatch pack would be silly fun. Especially once Mountune or Cobb gets hold of it - assuming that is a detuned RS motor, I would assume bolt ons and tune will put down big power.

I have had multiple Broncos. My favorite being a retired Sheriff Dept. Bronco. I was really anxious for this and I may pull the trigger on a 2 door reserve

Tire replacement will cost you a grand for a cheap set. 315/70R17 on all 4 corners

The dealer I bought my car from had an old restored Bronco on the showroom floor, with a V8 and a 4 speed. That little Tonka toy had my inner child wanting to go off-roading.
