It would not even be 3-5 whp, which is within most dyno variances anyway.

'For the sound' cannot even be used as a rationale, since an aftermarket cat back will give you that, as much as you want, depending on which one you choose. [wink]
i have a MBRP catback on mine. Read a lot of mixed reviews on it but I personally love it.

That's SMART, as it's something this car actually needs, even with factory power levels, despite those on here claiming it's unnecessary, even with 400 WHP. <-[nono] [thumbdown]
Once I got my stage 1 tune from stratified, I realized how bad this car needed an LSD. At stock level yeah but it was somewhat manageable. I was an idiot at first and took out my clutch one night. Got it repaired only to realize I also took out my 1st and 2nd gear. 1st pops out on occations. Hopped on eBay and got massively lucky with a tranny for 400$ a few months ago. Now I’m just saving for an lsd and repair my little bean.

edit: i can’t imagine this car with 400 and no lsd.:(

Just make sure you don’t visit the smog stations where the guys use mirrors to look underneath your car.

I do have to mention this. While visiting to get a crack repair on my windshield there was a smog station next to me. It was the weirdest thing seeing the technician using mirrors to inspect a stock looking Ford SUV. He also did the standard plug into the access port too. He did not put the car on rollers though. I would never get my car smogged there even if it is stock. Some of those guys are strict and I don’t want to deal with those guys.

^^^They ALWAYS used mirrors, as a matter of course/standard operating procedure back when Joyzee still had full inspections way back when.

I personally look for places that advertise “quick” smog tests and/or have a name like “Rocket Smog” or something.

after reading this, you DONT need to upgrade the DP on a BT?
I want to go BT within the year but im kinda worried about smog esp with a DP, even a catted high flo

300hp is a nice figure for me.

you could get away with running the stock downpipe. Though I will say if someone goes to the pain of looking in there it will look like a different turbo as it is larger and relocates the bpv/blow off valve. Which is right on the stock turbo. Seriously how old is your car? How much time do you have before you will be required to do a smog check? On my 18 I have 5 more years left before I have to have a smog. So where I am at in 5 years is quite a ways away hence going S280 with Mountune Sportcat.

well that is something to think about. You have a few avenue’s that only you can decide on.
A Hybrid would look stock and you could run a stock downpipe. You will be hard pressed to pull 300hp out of it though. It would be faster than stock though and you can always flash back to a OTS Cobb tune as they are CARB certified or even a stock tune. You just need to drive it around a bit after flashing it to put it in ready state.
You just drive it mellow when going to the smog guy. Plus he just plugs it in and reads the ecu flash and the monitors.

Seems like hybrid is the way to go? im definitely leaning more towards keeping the stock downpipe so this is good info for me. Dont want to deal with the annual dp swap.

300 would be great but im guessing that 300 figure will depend more on the type of gas and supporting mods used eh? damn cali and our 91s, im getting a bit tired of mixing for e30

You will not reach 300whp on a Hybrid in California on stock fuel system. IMO you would need 93 octane gas and a e30 tune to get around 280. If you upgrade your fuel system then you would hit 300.
I get 300whp but I am running a S280 with a E30 tune and it flows more than your Hybrid can . I am also as far as I can go on the stock fuel system. I could really use a set of injectors to get another 30-40whp.

Of course it can be done.
Just weld mount tabs on the aftermarket cat and install an OEM heatshield.
Maybe just me - but the headshield is on the X manifold protecting the turbo. 3 10mm bolts and of....dammit! still a pain in my ass to get in there! The OE front pipe w/cat is a thousand f^ckin'dollars! My bracket studs rusted off and I have snake-like movement along the whole exhaust system. I know I'm gonna snap header bolts, so we just clunk along and look at our Woosh porn-exhaust header.....

Could one somehow stainless weld a factory heat shield to an aftermarket catcon down pipe?
Of course it can be done.
Just weld mount tabs on the aftermarket cat and install an OEM heatshield.
The question was about the downpipe/CAT heatshield, as I understood it.

The OEM CAT heatshield mounts to the OEM downpipe which is also the CAT.
Most aftermarket downpipes do not have tabs to remount the heatshield.
Without this CAT heatshield the AFTERMARKET CAT can easily be seen and therefore could fail the smog test.
