Just read this latest edition and I think they should change the name to EVTrend! It was full of crap about EV's, so look out when people start buying them in their thousands when you can't buy any more new gas powered cars. How are they going to charge all these crappy vehicles when we don't have enough power in the grids to prevent brown-outs and black-outs? Pity I probably won't be around to watch the fun!

Move east, plenty of power when everyone isn't crammed as close to the Pacific as they can get.

EVs are the future... fossil fuels ain't. Cry foul and resist if you want in the name of nostalgia/purism/politicking, but the table has been set.

What happens when/if people do that and no more power stations are being built, but they're pushing like hell for EV's?

Ideally renewable energy? Efficiency leads the push on EVs...

Just because we can't change the grid/infrastructure with a snap of our fingers doesn't mean progress isn't worth working towards (I see that's where this discussion is going). Technological advancements in this field is something I would imagine driving enthusiasts would be excited about - vehicles have gotten immensely more sophisticated and exciting with the advancement of materials/electronics/engineering, I personally like seeing what comes next.

Unfortunately the car magazines have to cover what the manufacturers are announcing as their new models. And all the manufacturers of any size are rushing headlong towards EV SUVs and trucks with an occasional car. So that's what's out there to report on. You can thank your state government and the European governments they are copying for the mandates requiring all cars to be EVs in the near future for this.

There are electric motors and fuel powered engines. I think the title Motor Trend is now even more accurate.

How much damage is being done to the environment mining for the minerals and metals for the batteries? What do you do with the batteries when they can't be charged any more? Nobody is even thinking about THAT problem! Where is the fuel to make the electricity going to come from, coal, oil, gas? This makes EV's polluters!

Less than what fossil fuels are doing.
What do you do with the batteries when they can't be charged any more?
They can be recycled, like any battery.
Nobody is even thinking about THAT problem!
It's not a problem if done right.

No one denies that it pollutes. It's a matter of stopping carbon emissions.

Once they're gone, who's going to pay upwards of $26,000 for new ones? By the way gas powered cars are cleaner than the mining that goes on for the materials for the batteries. Do your research XR650R. Carbon emissions, would that be CO2 or carbon monoxide?

The biggest environmental danger posed by lithium mining is the amount of water the process uses up: an estimated 500,000 gallons of water per ton of lithium extracted. This can endanger the communities where the lithium is being mined because it can cause droughts or famine if operations are not kept in check.

Pollution isn't real so it's not a problem.

This is the same playbook and talking points. Mining lithium ruins the environment. EV's will take the grid down. EV's burn brown energy so they are just as dirty as ICE cars. What are we going to do with all of these spent batteries!?

While some of the above is a challenge, some is incorrect, and some is the opposite of reality, what is *complete* BS is stating that folks aren't thinking about every aspect of a move away from a brown economy. To make statements such as "no more power stations are being built" or assuming that the only way we'll ever refine lithium is with current extraction methods or that lithium is end-state are just examples of a calculated mis-understanding or ignorance of the EV ecosystem.

Current EVs are not ideal, but any movement in reducing the release of sequestered carbon is better than thinking that current-state won't continue to effect the environment.
