The much-anticipated Ford Focus RS might be one of the hottest hatches currently available for order, but Ford is apparently already working on something more potent. Australia's Motor magazine cited unnamed Ford insiders who said the automaker is currently considering an even hotter version of the Focus RS.

If the project takes flight, Ford will likely revive the short-lived Ford Focus RS500 badging -- which acted as a nod to previous rally-ready Fords like the Cosworth-powered Sierra RS500. It also makes space for a Group B rally-inspired Ford Focus RS2000 to join Ken Block's Focus RS RX machine on stage.

Motor Magazine thinks Ford has hit a wall with the 2.3-liter turbocharged I4 and will move towards enhancing performance by shaving weight off the RS500 -- think polycarbonate windows, carbon fiber bodywork and forged aluminum suspension pieces. Who knows what Ford will actually do if it pulls the trigger on the hotter RS, but we know there is always more power available -- depending on how much they want to compromise reliability and drivability.

Until Ford decides whether or not to build an even hotter Focus RS, we'll be happy to settle for the long (and still) -awaited Focus RS.
