So.. This has been a curiosity of mine. NO ONE makes a performance Ign coil of any nature accept a company that wants to sell 4 for almost $800. Which I think is absolutely ludicrous.....I've been pounding the internet pavement with no luck. It may be a fruitless search and no one will ever make them. Maybe a Vendor knows something we don't know or get the ball rolling. I don't know if anyone would be interested or not....I work night shift and there is Time to ponder stuff....as you can tell most of my posts are late night. Any who this is the post to kick off the discussion. If there will ever be one.

I keep hoping holley company who makes the msd ignition coils will make some for our 1.6L ecoboost
since they make coils for all the ecoboost motors except the 1.6L.
I want a set in red.

It's probably because there is no advantage gained by using "performance" coil packs. Even a modified 1.6 turbo Fiesta engine doesn't operate in parameters where you might see any difference from an uprated coil. Maybe they think Fiesta ST drivers are smart enough to not need a "prettier" coil pack in bright red.

have you found anywhere the stock coils are left wanting? Just wondering.

At least in the fiat world, the coils were swappable between cars.

My fiat 500 was able to use the stock coils from my wife's giulia when I upgrade the giulia coils. The alfa's magneti marelli coils made my 500 Abarth SO much smoother and they were an *exact* fit. 10/10 would steal wifes coils again.

Are there any ford mechanics on the forum that could say "the ST coils look just like X coils"? There has to be at least one ford mech here right? :)

I mean, it makes sense to want to change to upgraded coils. But so far I don't think anyone has needed them or run out of spark.

I come from the LS world where swapping to truck or LS7 coils is the bee's knees. Yet my Camaro still runs stock coils, cause it doesn't have enough power to need anything else. Same thing would apply here I think.

I think some people just like to change parts, even if they're not necessary and aren't really an "upgrade".

To what end, though? Replacing OEM parts before their limits have ever been exceeded is backwards. At what point do the OEM coils fail to keep up? I remember the mazdaspeed community replacing the stock coil springs with solid copper rods when they started to have issues with rough idles, hesitation, and spark blowout.

Just get the oem style ngk's from rock auto. I dont think anybody has hit the threshold of factory coils on these cars.

There is Fomoco....Ngk....Delphi...Etc. but not True upgraded windings with the ability to generate more power as an option. Maybe a vendor will catch wind and conjure something up. Then again....it could turn into upgraded CV axles also.

Make a bracket and run. GM LS coils and wires. The only weakness to factory coils is how they handle heat.

The man wants some performance ignition coils. Nothing wrong with that. When you plan to hold onto a vehicle forever having options is nice.
I had a performance ignition coil on my Ford escort why because why not.

Was that escort run by a distributor. Or waste spark coil pack?

There were gains to be had back when cars ran distributors. Nowadays its hardly anything powerwise on a c.o.p. car. It would be more for handling heat and load without the coils degrading.

Waste spark. I'm very much aware of how ignition systems work. Automotive technology is what I went to school for.

It's not about what it does or doesn't do it's about what the Man wants.
If somebody wants it just because they want MSD red coils so be it.

I "upgraded" to Accel (Holley) coil packs on my previous car (Acura TSX) and regretted it: two of them failed within two years, and I didn't notice any benefit. They looked cool, though.

I think there's a balance here - sure, OEM coils for a particular car may not be as strong as aftermarket ones in terms of output, but remember the OEM ones are engineered to do their job for at least the length of the warranty (which can be quite long, in the case of an extended factory warranty). The aftermarket ones with a 90 day or one-year warranty only have to last 90 days to one-year. They can run at 100% 24/7, because who cares if they burn out 400 days into their life span? The stock ones are built to put out less than they are actually capable of, which is why the service life is so long. That's why, with every vehicle, finding "stronger" OEM coils from another vehicle is, to me, a better bet than buying aftermarket/third party coils. Finding out that the Afla Romeo coils fit the Fiat 500 Abarth perfectly was awesome - the magneti marelli coils were *so* much better than the stock fiat 500 coils. Swapped coils at 3000 ish miles on the new abarth and the stock coils were *already* starting to get intermittent.

I was mistaken above, btw - I still have my wife's Giulia coils in the garage, I bought stock Alfa 4c coils for my abarth, those are the exact same part.

Also the giulia was a piece of shit. Incredible to drive, but a piece of shit. Glad it's gone.

Companys are smart enough to produce them if they think there is enough interest and money to be made as that is called business no matter what color they are.

When I turbo charged by '86 Fox body we used upgraded ignition to fire a spark though a more densely packed charge. The N/A guys wanted (and still want) a hotter spark for a better burn. These days we turbo guys are re-gapping our plugs for a colder spark to avoid cooking our plugs. With this in mind, what's the upside of a more powerful coil if we're asking less of it as we dial-up boost?

Directly from Stratified (http://stratifiedauto.com/blog/spark-plug-tech/): "For the Ford Ecoboost we still recommend a plug that is one step colder than OEM for mildy bolted cars especially since 21+psi of boost is quite common. For highly modified cars that see a lot of heat it is advisable to try a plug which is two steps colder than OEM."

I beat on my FiST - it's a track day car: I drive to the track, pound on it for 3 20 minute sessions, and drive it home. I certainly prefer OEM reliability over an aftermarket coil that is capable of producing a hotter spark that I won't ever use.

That said, there's no gains to be found with exhaust upgrades, either, but they sound and look cool, so that's on my list. I can't hear more powerful coils.

@TyphoonFiST: you're soooo close to having a giant killer! Forget about upgraded coils and get a tubular manifold for the GTX!
