The Focus RS is the king of the hot-hatch castle - that much became clear after we drove it, but Ford is reportedly looking to turn up the heat. Considerably.

Per Autoblog, rumour has it Ford is working on an RS500 variant. Here's the catch: If that particular model comes to life, it probably won't sport any power upgrades. That's because at 350 horsepower, the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-four engine is already fairly close to being maxed out when it comes to its current tune.

Instead, Ford could very well end up emphasizing improvements in other areas - such as weight reduction through composite body panels, suspension upgrades, cooling improvements and a dual-clutch transmission, though the latter arguably undoes the Focus RS' biggest charm.

Of course, this is just a rumour after all. But having appeared on the Sierra Cosworth and the previous-generation Focus RS, Ford certainly has a history with the name. Depending on whether or not the current Focus RS is a success, we could see the RS500 revived sooner rather than later.
